Coming of Age {Sealand x Reader}

Day 3 —Write about the worst time you've ever put your foot in your mouth.

"I'd like you to watch Peter for me tonight," he'd said one day as the two of them sat together in their bus seat. She turned to look at them, her brows crinkled in confusion.

    "What?"

He sighed and gestured a few seats behind them, where the loud boy they were unfortunately friends with was laughing at something with his pale bus-seat partner, Gilbert. "Alfred's grades are falling a bit in English class, and he asked me to tutor him tonight." At her groan, he quickly waved his hands about. "It's only for tonight for a few hours, that's all I'm asking!" He looked at her with his brows drawn together and wide eyes in a pathetic pout. "Please?"

She grinned at his expression and let out a laugh, shaking her head slowly. "Fine," she finally gave in, "I'm doing this for you. You owe me, Kirkland!" He immediately dropped the act and smiled widely, already knowing she would accept.

"Perfect! Thank you, [Name]. I appreciate it, and I know that Peter will be good. He's met you plenty of times when you've come over to study with me, so he shouldn't have any reason to dislike you by now." She rolled her eyes with a chuckle.

"That's relieving." Arthur bumped her shoulder jokingly as he stood up when the bus rolled to a stop and Alfred ran to the front, grabbing Arthur's backpack on the way.

"I'll see you in a few hours!" The boy yelled as he was dragged off of the vehicle and down the street by his friend, making her laugh once more.

"Peter!" She shouted as she opened the door to their house, shutting it behind her quietly. She'd been over enough times to have the ability to navigate the home without difficulty, but still was reluctant as she made her way through the threshold.

"Who's that, Arthur? Did you bring Alfred with you-" A young boy came crashing down the hall until he came to a halt at discovering the girl standing in the doorway.

"Who are you?" He nearly spat as he looked around for his older brother. "Where's Arthur?"

"Peter, don't you remember me? I'm [Name], your brother's friend. I've come over a few times to study." He looked at her with suspicion.

"I think I remember you. But where is he?" he asked again. She realized that he must have been confused; his brother was not home, but instead a girl that he'd met only a few times was standing in front of him in his own house.

"He's helping Arthur with homework, so he asked me to babysit you," she said. The corners of his mouth twitched downward.

"But babysitting is for children!" He yelled, his cheeks flushed in frustration. "And I am not a child!" At that, he seemed to have exploded. His face turned a darker red as he turned around and stomped down the hall to his room, yelling the whole time.

"I told Arthur that I can watch myself, I'm old enough by now! Mum and Dad don't trust me, none of my brothers trust me, and now I have some stupid girl babysitter!" His voice was seething by the end as he came to his room, sharply slamming the door behind him. She'd tried to follow him down the hall, and behind the door she could still hear him angrily murmuring to himself.

"Some faux pas that was," she muttered to herself as she went back to the entryway to take her shoes and coat off, and set her backpack down by the bench near the door. She already knew that the young boy had anger issues; it ran in Arthur's family, so it was no surprise.

She went into the kitchen and began to familiarize herself with the fridge's contents, eagerly grabbing a few snacks to satisfy her after-school needs. After a few minutes of digging through her food, she soon realized that the blonde had made himself known as he stood in the entry of the hallway looking at her sheepishly. She stared back at him, silent, until he sniffled once. Twice. Without any warning, he had run across the living room and nearly flung himself over the surprised girl so quickly that she nearly didn't have enough time to move her plate to avoid it getting crushed by the child.

He sobbed into her shoulder and clung onto her like she was his own mother. Her eyes widened at the sudden display, not quite sure how to deal with the crying boy. She slowly put her hand on his back and rubbed it soothingly, not uttering a word. After what seemed like minutes, the boy's tears reduced to small hiccups as he tried to dry the wetness off of his rosy cheeks.

"I'm sorry," he mumbled as he rubbed his eyes, only succeeding in making them redder. "No one ever treats me like my age, they think I'm incompetent and need to be watched over all the time. I want to be independent, to be able to do what I want!" He pouted and looked down, looking even younger than he was. His babysitter giggled, making him look up and glare at her sharply. "What are you laughing at?!" He shot, his cheeks heating up again in embarrassment.

She could only shake her head and continue to laugh. "You sure have a fire inside of you." He frowned, looking at her in confusion. She smiled softly and tapped the left side of his chest, "Here. You've got a strong spirit; you want to be treated as you should, and you don't give up easily. That's very admirable, especially coming from someone as young as you." He started to retort back about his age, but she quickly shushed him. "The fact that you're not an adult and have such a stronger attitude than anyone I know, I mean."

His expression seemed to turn almost smug at her compliments, and she knocked back his hat to tousle his hair. "Why don't you say we get you something to eat, then we can go hang out in your room. We'll talk about grown up things," she said, and his eyes seemed to light up with an excitement only a child could possess.

"Really?" He squeaked. She nodded happily and picked him up as she headed towards the kitchen. "You can be an adult when I'm here, alright? I'll treat you however old you wish to treated like." He grinned and threw his hands up in the air excitedly before flinging his arms around her neck with a giggle.

"You're the best ever! I'm going to tell Arthur I want him to bring you with him more often!"

The two grabbed their treats and headed off with a new perspective on each person, both grinning sillily with thoughts only the two of them would be able to understand.
Hey, I'm actually really happy with how this came out! It wasn't super short, but not unbearably long; I actually think it was reasonable! This is my favorite one so far out of the stories for the challenge, but then again; it's the 3rd day. I still have 27 left, so there's plenty of time to improve!

If any of you were confused by the term "put your foot in the mouth", it basically means a social mistake or a faux pas. Don't worry, I actually had to look it up just a few minutes ago when I saw the prompt xD

That's really all I have to say. Nothing's really happened besides I'm wearing a brace on my right hand - which sucks because that's my dominant hand, so I have to take it off when I write -_- But I can still type with it on! >:D Can't stop me now, biatch! But yeah, my wrist has been hurting on and off for probably two years now, I can't really remember, but we finally talked to my doctor about it and she suggested a brace. It's now been a full day, and even just putting it on for the first five minutes made it feel so much better. I don't know how long I'm going to have to wear this habitually, but I'm assuming it's going to be a while. I don't mind having my friends write for me on occasion - my friend actually wrote for a whole class period for me, which was really sweet of her to do <3 - but I'm definitely happy that I'm still able to type easily with this. JK NOTHING CAN STOP ME ANYWAYS</strike>

Alright, I'll see you all tomorrow! OH YEAH AND WISH ME LUCK! I'm writing stories for three freaking contests, and I'm going to try and do a voice audition for someone on YouTube! I won't say what it's for or what the parts are so I won't spoil anything, but if I get it I'll definitely share with you guys! ^^
